The Armandale Castle, shown at Paul's wharf in Durban, belonged to the Union-Castle mail service, which linked Britain with southern Africa and made Durban a regular port of call. Natal was still a British colony when the picture was made, and the harbor's quays handled wool, sugar, and passengers moving to and from the interior. The print comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, assembled by the travel writer and lecturer Frank Carpenter, who gathered images of distant places for his popular books and talks. The caption gives only a date range, so the exact year is uncertain, but the scene captures the busy age of steam shipping in the region.
