Few images show the scale of the 1900 Galveston hurricane as plainly as this view of a Spanish steamer's wreckage stranded at the 20th Street Wharf. The storm struck the Texas coast on September 8, 1900, driving a surge across the low-lying island and into the harbor, where ships were tossed onto docks, piers, and the shore. The disaster killed thousands, making it among the deadliest natural disasters in United States history. The photograph records the damage to the waterfront in the days that followed, when the city was beginning the work of recovery.
