Crowds and boats fill the water in this view of a steamer trip on Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in New Hampshire. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this picture around 1906, was building a broad record of American scenery and resort towns in those years, and lake excursions were among the most popular ways for summer visitors to see the region. Steamers carried travelers between hotels, landings and villages around the lake, so a scene like this shows how central water travel was to the White Mountain resort country. The crowd and the mix of boats hint at the holiday mood of the period.
