Taken around 1906, this view shows a lake steamer tied up at the pier in Petoskey, a resort town on Little Traverse Bay on the northeast shore of Lake Michigan. In the early twentieth century, passenger steamers were a main link between northern Michigan's summer resorts and larger ports, carrying visitors, mail, and freight along the lakeshore. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative, produced a large body of views of American towns, waterfronts, and transportation, so the picture also documents how a lakeside town depended on its dock.
