Few places in the country were as tied to copper as Houghton, on Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, where mines on the peninsula sent ore and refined metal to Lake Superior ports for shipment eastward. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative, made around 1905 by the Detroit Publishing Company, shows dockside work as copper was moved aboard a steamer. The company photographed American towns, industries and transportation routes for commercial sale, so the image records both the labor of the waterfront and the lake traffic that carried the region's copper to market.
