Tied up at the left edge of this view is the whaleback steamer *Mariska* of Duluth, shown in the Weitzel Lock at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Whalebacks were a distinctive Great Lakes design, with rounded, cigar-shaped hulls that shed heavy seas, and they were built to haul iron ore and grain through the St. Marys River locks. The Weitzel Lock, completed in 1881 and named for Army engineer Godfrey Weitzel, was one of the busiest passages on the lakes, so the photograph captures a working waterway from the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company made the negative, which was later donated to the State Historical Society of Colorado.
