The ship in this view is the *Roosevelt*, the steamer Robert Peary used on his Arctic expeditions, shown here at Newburgh, New York, on the Hudson River. Peary had returned from his 1908-1909 expedition, and the ship was part of the maritime pageantry of the 1909 Hudson-Fulton Celebration, which marked Henry Hudson's 1609 voyage up the river and Robert Fulton's 1807 steamboat run. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format views document American river towns and ships of that era. Its sturdy hull and smoke-stacked profile reflect a vessel built for ice as much as for passage.
