The steamer Sampo is named in the title, but the record gives no route, port, or date beyond the rough span of 1895 to 1915, so its working life remains unclear. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which during those decades sent photographers across the United States to record towns, rail lines, and waterways. Its 8 by 10 inch glass negative was a large format that captured fine detail in a vessel's hull, rigging, and deck. Steamboats of this era carried freight and passengers and were central to river and lake commerce, which makes the image a useful record of that trade.
