Rather than a view of the vessel itself, this is a photograph of a painting of the steamer Rotterdam, signed by the artist Fred Pansing. The Detroit Publishing Company made it as a glass plate negative between 1897 and 1910, when the firm was reproducing paintings and prints alongside its better-known travel views. Because it records a painted rendering, it shows how a steamboat was pictured for the public at the turn of the century, with the artist's choices of light, water, and composition standing in for a direct camera view.
