The steamer Potsdam is shown here not as a photograph of the vessel but as a reproduction of a painting signed by Fred Pansing. Because the camera recorded the artist's work, the ship appears as he chose to render her, with the composition, light, and water shaped by his hand. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued this view between about 1900 and 1910, reproduced many paintings and tinted views for postcards and booklets, so the image shows as much about how marine art circulated at the time as about the boat itself.
