Few pictures on this board name a specific vessel and its owner as plainly as this one, which shows the steamer Massachusetts under the Eastern Steamship Company name. The company ran passenger and freight steamers along the New England coast and to Nova Scotia in the early twentieth century, carrying travelers, mail and cargo between Boston and ports to the north. This is a copy made from an earlier photographic print, not a view taken directly from the deck, so its details reflect that reproduction. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado, as part of the Detroit Publishing Company collection.
