The steamer *Rhode Island* stands out on the board for its owner, the Providence and Stonington Steamship Company, which ran passenger boats across Long Island Sound between New York and southern New England. Its route linked New York with Stonington, Connecticut, where passengers continued by rail to Providence and Boston, so the ship was part of a fast travel network that carried many commuters and travelers in the mid-nineteenth century. Currier & Ives produced hundreds of steamboat views like this one, and many were sold as keepsakes to passengers and shipping enthusiasts. The print is signed with the initials "G.M." on the image, and its hand coloring gives the paddle wheels, smoke, and water a lively, detailed finish.
