The steamer Tionesta, operated by the Great Lakes Transit Company, is the subject here, and this negative is a copy of an earlier photographic print rather than an original view taken from the deck or dock. Lake steamers of the early twentieth century carried passengers and bulk freight such as grain and iron ore between Great Lakes ports, and a company photograph like this one would have served as a record of the fleet. The Detroit Publishing Company, which assembled this collection, issued many views of American waterways and towns, though this copy carries no company number. The glass plate, a 5 by 7 inch negative, dates to sometime between 1910 and 1930 and came to the collection as a gift in 1949.
