The steamer shown here is identified as the *Tionesta*, a name the cataloger supplied, so the vessel's identity rests on that record rather than on a caption from the time. The negative is a 5-by-7-inch glass plate from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that between about 1900 and 1920 issued large numbers of views of rivers, harbors and tourist destinations, and steamboats were a favorite subject. Glass plates of this size were prized for their sharp detail, which lets viewers study the hull, deck fittings and the people working or traveling aboard. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
