A steamer taking on sugar at a Honolulu dock sets this picture apart from the many harbor views of the islands. Sugar was the dominant crop of the Hawaiian Islands in the early 1900s, grown on large plantations and shipped in quantity to refineries on the U.S. mainland, so scenes like this were a routine part of the port's life. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm that documented American cities, ports and industries in the years around 1910 to 1920, and this glass negative is dated only approximately to that span. Faint streaks across the plate come from the original coating breaking down over time.
