A Brazilian steamer in Washington, D.C., is the subject of this January 1863 view, a reminder that the capital's waterfront was busy with foreign and domestic shipping even in the middle of the Civil War. The Potomac brought vessels, goods and travelers to the city, so a steamer from South America would have stood out to residents and officials alike. The picture was made by David B. Woodbury, a photographer who worked in the capital, using the wet collodion process on glass, which demanded quick exposure and development in the field. Its negative is part of the Library of Congress's Civil War glass negative collection.
