This chromolithograph shows the steamer Columbia, billed in its title as the "gem of the ocean," and it was issued by Currier & Ives in New York around 1877. Its design credits go to Charles R. Parsons and Lyman W. Atwater, both marine artists who produced many of the firm's ship and steamboat views. Excursion steamers of this era carried holidaymakers on day trips along rivers and coastal waters, and the firm's color prints helped make such vessels familiar to households across the country. The print is a useful record of how popular steamboat imagery was marketed in the late 1800s.
