A firebox for the first steamer on the Copper River, photographed on a Nome street with sleds and storefronts nearby, shows river transport and town life side by side. Nome boomed after gold was found on its beaches in 1899, and its streets filled with freight that moved by sled through the winter. Steamers were a key link to the Copper River interior, so a boiler part waiting in town shows how far supplies had to travel. The print is from the Frank and Frances Carpenter collection at the Library of Congress.
