The side-wheeler *Chateaugay* is the subject of this glass negative, which the Detroit Publishing Company made sometime between 1900 and 1910 as part of its large collection of American travel views. The plate is inscribed "1857," which may be the year the boat was built, though the record does not say so. In that period, paddle steamers like the *Chateaugay* were a main link for passengers and freight among the towns and resorts along Lake Champlain, which lies between New York and Vermont.
