This cartoon takes aim at the torpedoing of the French cross-Channel steamer Sussex, which a German submarine struck in the English Channel in March 1916, with Americans among the injured. The drawing is credited to W.A. Rogers, a prominent American cartoonist of the period, and the caption card places it among 1916 cartoons critical of Germany. The attack pushed Washington toward a sharp diplomatic confrontation, and Germany's later pledge to spare unarmed passenger ships grew out of that crisis. The card gives no date, so the 1916 connection rests on its subject.
