The engraving shows the Mexican steamer *Miramon* held under the guns of the U.S. sloop *Preble* off Algiers, Louisiana, the river community across from New Orleans. The ship's name honors Miguel Miramón, a Conservative general fighting the Liberal government of Benito Juárez in Mexico's War of the Reform. Harper's Weekly ran the scene in 1860, when the seizure of a vessel tied to a Mexican faction strained relations between Washington and Mexico City. The print is a useful view of how the American press framed that dispute for readers at home.
