Henry Walke, a naval officer who drew this scene himself, shows Commodore Matthew C. Perry's squadron working its way up the Tabasco River at Devil's Bend in June 1847. Perry relied on shallow-draft steam vessels that could handle rivers too shallow for the Navy's larger warships, which makes the scene a fitting example of the steamboat's role in the Mexican War. Sarony & Major published the lithograph in New York around 1848 as part of a series titled *Naval Scenes in the Mexican War*, and it remains a useful record of how the Navy pushed inland by river.
