Rather than showing a whole vessel, this color lithograph lays out the instruments and gear that guided and worked a sailing ship: a compass, a sextant, anchors and rigging, each drawn with close attention. It was published by the American Sunday School Union in Philadelphia, a nonprofit that issued religious and educational material for young readers in the mid-nineteenth century. The stone was drawn by L. Brechemin and printed by P. S. Duval, a Philadelphia lithographer known for maps and views, which places the work within the city's busy color-printing trade.
