Collect Pond, a freshwater pond in lower Manhattan, is the setting here, and the title ties this view to the origins of steam navigation. In the 1790s the pond was ringed by tanneries and other workshops, and it was the site of early experiments by inventors such as John Fitch, who tried steam-powered boats in the years around the turn of the century. The picture is best read as a retrospective view: it shows a quiet, rural-looking waterside that later printmakers and writers linked to the start of American steam travel. Later filling of the pond transformed the district into the crowded neighborhood known as Five Points.
