Few posters of the period set a route map beside the Statue of Liberty as this one does, linking a Dutch shipping line to the New York harbor it aimed to reach. The Holland-America Line, a Rotterdam company founded in 1873, carried passengers and emigrants across the Atlantic and was rebuilding its service after the Second World War when this poster appeared around 1950. The route runs from Rotterdam with calls at Boulogne-sur-Mer and Southampton, the French and English ports where travelers could board on the way west.
