Titled "Europe to America," this poster sells the transatlantic crossing itself as the appeal, part of the promotional work the United States Lines relied on in the 1950s. The company ran passenger liners on the Atlantic, and its flagship, the SS United States, had entered service in 1952 as a showcase of American shipbuilding. Before jet airliners began carrying passengers across the ocean in the late 1950s, ships were the main way most travelers made the trip, so posters like this one aimed to persuade people to choose a liner. The bold color lithography reflects how shipping lines marketed comfort and prestige in that period.
