The Ships Are Coming is a 1917 poster issued by the United States Shipping Board, the agency created to build and manage merchant shipping as America entered the First World War. Its image of ships and a hopeful, forward-looking scene was meant to rally workers and the public to the shipyards and to the nation's need for cargo vessels to carry troops and supplies across the Atlantic. Posters like this one were a major part of wartime mobilization, reaching ordinary citizens through streets, factories and newspapers. Look closely at how the design blends industrial imagery with a sense of national optimism.
