Few posters of the era tie the ice trade to a wartime food cause, and this one does so directly: it asks the ice industry to help keep food from spoiling so it can reach starving people overseas. The United States Food Administration, led by Herbert Hoover, ran conservation campaigns during World War I, urging Americans to waste less and send more abroad. Refrigeration was part of that effort, since cold storage and iced transport kept perishable goods usable for shipment. The piece was printed in color by Ketterlinus of Philadelphia for the National Association of Ice Industries, and its wording shows how the home front was asked to take part in the war effort.
