Keep the home garden going" and "The world cry, food" are the lines that set this 1918 poster apart from the Food Administration's many other appeals. Designed by William McKee and printed in Boston by Forbes, it was issued as No. 24 in the agency's series. The United States Food Administration, led by Herbert Hoover, was created in 1917 to conserve staples and send supplies to Allied countries and American troops. Its campaigns urged households to plant vegetable gardens, a practice later called Victory gardens, so that more commercial produce could go overseas.
