This 1919 chromolithograph pictures schoolchildren working a garden plot and hauling produce in wheelbarrows, with the slogan "Helping Hoover" tying their labor to the national food effort. Herbert Hoover directed the U.S. Food Administration during the First World War, which urged Americans to grow, save, and conserve food so that more could be shipped to Allied countries and troops overseas. The poster was issued under the U.S. School Garden Army, which recruited young people to plant vegetable gardens at home and at school. Its message reflects how wartime food conservation reached into classrooms and backyards, and the cheerful, orderly scene shows the campaign's effort to make civic duty look like everyday work.
