Uncle Sam's own name is the pitch in this 1918 poster by James Montgomery Flagg, who had made his recruiting image famous the year before. It tells servicemen that the government policy they were issued is "the strongest, safest and cheapest insurance in the world" and urges them to keep it after discharge. Congress had created that coverage in 1917 to protect troops and their families, and the poster, printed by Forbes of Boston, extends the wartime message to the return home, when a veteran would have to decide whether to keep paying premiums on his own.
