Labeled as a settler's first blockhouse, this chromolithograph presents a sturdy log structure of the kind frontier families raised before they could afford anything grander. Blockhouses had thick walls and small firing openings, so they served as both home and refuge when neighbors were few and the surrounding country was still unsettled. The print dates to about 1870 and carries the imprint of E. Sachse & Co., a firm known for colorful views and idealized scenes of American life. Its pioneer theme reflects the nostalgia for the frontier that was common in that decade.
