Few steamboat voyages carry as much weight in American history as the first trip of Robert Fulton's vessel up the Hudson to Albany in 1807. This etching, made by S. Hollyer and dated around 1907, marks that journey a century after it happened. The boat covered roughly 150 miles against the river's current, showing that steam power could run reliably on a commercial route and helping to launch regular steamboat service on the Hudson. The record notes that the original etching could not be located in 2004, so the image is known today through a copy photograph.
