A paddle steamer with a tall smokestack appears in this watercolor, which its record links to the U.S.S. Susquehanna during Commodore Perry's landing at Kurihama, Japan. Perry's squadron arrived in Edo Bay in July 1853 to press the Japanese government to open its ports to American trade, and Susquehanna, a steam-powered warship, was one of the ships in that force. The record's date range, 1855 to 1950, is wide, and the caption information is unverified, so the vessel's identity and the moment shown should be read with some caution.
