The name painted on the boat in the background, *Belle of the Bends*, identifies this side-wheeler at the Vicksburg, Mississippi, landing, where the river bends beneath the city's high bluffs. Between about 1900 and 1910, when this glass negative was made, steamboats still carried cotton, freight and passengers along the Mississippi, and a levee like this one was the busy edge where cargo was loaded and travelers came and went. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced the view, sold many scenes of river towns and travel destinations, so the picture preserves a record of river commerce just before railroads and automobiles reshaped how people and goods moved.
