Trefriw sits on the tidal River Conwy in North Wales, and this view centers on its steamboat pier, a detail that sets it apart from the village scenes usually shown in these views. The image is a photochrom, a color process developed by the Photoglob company in Zürich and widely sold in the United States by the Detroit Publishing Company, which issued this copy in its 1905 catalog. Dated to roughly the 1890s, it captures a period when steamers still carried passengers and goods along Welsh waterways, and when photochroms were prized as colorful records of distant places.
