Two Mississippi steamboats, the Baltic and the Diana, are shown racing in this view, a contest that drew crowds to both riverbanks. Races like this were a common spectacle on western rivers before the Civil War, as captains pushed their engines hard for bragging rights and sometimes for wagers. The record dates the picture to about 1859, though that date is unverified and the maker is uncertain. It offers a lively glimpse of the steamboat era at its height.
