A passenger steamer moves through the Sainte Claire ship canal, a navigable channel tied to the St. Clair River and the Great Lakes shipping routes that carried people and goods between Michigan and Ontario. The card was issued by the Detroit Publishing Co. around 1912 and printed in its "Phostint" color process, which gave photographs a soft, painted look that suited travel souvenirs of the period. Steamers like this one were a common sight on the lakes in the early 1900s, when passenger boats still carried tourists along the waterways.
