This 1936 color travel poster promotes the Göta Canal as a scenic waterway, presenting the route as a voyage across southern Sweden rather than a simple shipping lane. The canal links Gothenburg on the west coast with Stockholm on the east coast, using a chain of rivers, lakes and locks that include Lake Vänern, Lake Vättern and Lake Mälaren. Completed in 1832, it became a popular passenger route, and by the 1930s steamers carrying tourists were a familiar sight along its waters.
