This lithograph shows a floating dam, a temporary barrier used during the construction of the Victoria Bridge at Montreal, where workers sank the piers into the bed of the St. Lawrence. Such structures helped hold back the swift current and drifting ice so that building could proceed in calmer water. The plate appeared near the end of James Hodges' 1860 account of the bridge, published in London by John Weale that same year, when the Prince of Wales opened the crossing. Its bird's-eye viewpoint also conveys the width of the river that steamboats had to navigate around the works.
