Few ships on this board carry as heavy a name as this one. The painting shows the second U.S. warship to bear the name Maine, under construction at the Cramp shipyard in Philadelphia, which was then one of the country's leading builders of naval vessels. The name recalled the first Maine, lost in an explosion in Havana harbor in February 1898, an event that helped push the nation into the Spanish-American War. Fred Pansing's painting was reproduced in color as a supplement to the Marine Review, a Cleveland trade journal that covered shipbuilding and maritime commerce for the industry.
