This chromolithograph advertises the State Line service from New York to Glasgow, Belfast, Dublin, Londonderry and Liverpool, with Austin Baldwin & Co. named as general agents. J. Ottmann, a New York lithography firm, produced the print around 1889, and the copyright notice in the agents' name shows the advertiser wanted its image protected. In the late 1800s, steamships carried large numbers of emigrants and tourists across the Atlantic, and companies competed for passengers with colorful images like this one. The ocean liner is the main subject, since the steamship itself was the product being sold.
