The title names the route itself, Cleveland, Buffalo and Toledo, which sets this piece apart from other steamboat images. The C & B Line carried passengers and freight across Lake Erie between these lakeshore cities, and in the years before automobiles and widespread highway travel, a lake steamer was a popular way to make an excursion. This color lithograph by R.B. Lawrence belongs to the advertising that filled timetables and travel pamphlets of the 1890s and 1900s, when chromolithography offered bright, detailed color at a modest cost. Pictures like this one show how steamship companies sold the lake as a holiday destination as well as a practical route.
