USS Dunderberg was one of the largest ironclad warships built during the American Civil War, and this lithograph captures the ship as it was presented to the public in its era. Launched in 1865 at the Morgan Iron Works in New York for the Union Navy, she was a casemate ironclad with an iron-plated hull and a ram at her bow, reflecting the navy's interest in heavy armor and ramming tactics. The war ended before she saw combat, and she was later sold to Russia and renamed Rossiya. Prints like this one helped Americans follow the growth of the new ironclad fleet, which had been reshaped by battles such as the clash between the Monitor and the Virginia.
