The steamer Columbia is the subject of this color postcard, issued by the Detroit Publishing Co. around 1908. The firm was one of the best-known American publishers of photochrome views, a process that printed photographs from several lithographic stones in color, giving scenes a soft, painted look. Its cards were sold widely to travelers, who mailed them home as souvenirs of trips on rivers and lakes. Steamboats like the Columbia were a familiar sight in that period, carrying passengers and freight before rail and the automobile took over much of that traffic.
