Few tobacco labels from this period depict women and children in the act of smoking, which sets this crayon lithograph apart from the usual cigar-box imagery. Its title, "Genuine Havana," points to the prestige that Cuban leaf carried in American markets, where a Havana label signaled quality. The print was made in 1868 by F. Heppenheimer & Co., a lithography firm that produced advertising and packaging art for tobacco makers during the 1860s. Its inclusion of women and children reflects how these labels sometimes pictured tobacco as a fashionable, domestic pleasure rather than only a men's habit.
