Pure Havana!" is the title Draper Hill gave this India ink drawing, which he signed and inscribed to a friend in February 1974. It appeared on February 5, 1974, as Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko, fresh from a state visit to Cuba, arrived in the United States for talks with Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and President Richard Nixon. Those meetings were meant to prepare Nixon's upcoming trip to the Soviet Union, and many observers expected Gromyko to raise the possible easing of Cold War tensions. The Cuba reference ties the drawing to that moment, and the white highlights over the tonal film give it a dramatic, staged look.

Medium1 drawing : India ink over pencil, with opaque white on tonal film overlay; 42.6 x 29.4 cm. (sheet)
