Fort William Henry Hotel, pictured here from the shore road, stood on the western shore of Lake George, close to the site of the British fort that was besieged and surrendered to the French in 1757. James Fenimore Cooper's novel *The Last of the Mohicans* drew on that battle, and by the early 1900s the lake was a fashionable summer destination for travelers arriving by rail and steamboat. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made many of these views for railroad and resort promotion, recorded the hotel and its grounds during this boom in tourism.
