Unlike the many views of Lake George on this board, this one is titled for a specific feature of the Fort William Henry Hotel, a place called the Grotto. The hotel stood at the southern end of the lake, near the site of the colonial fort that was besieged by the French and their allies in 1757, an event later dramatized in James Fenimore Cooper's *The Last of the Mohicans*. By the early 1900s, the lake had become a fashionable summer destination, and resort hotels like this one drew visitors who came to stroll, relax and take in the scenery. The picture was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its large-format views of American towns, resorts and landscapes.
