The Fort William Henry Hotel stood on Lake George on ground tied to a notorious episode of the French and Indian War. The British fort there was besieged by French forces under the Marquis de Montcalm in 1757, and the attack on the garrison as it withdrew became the basis for James Fenimore Cooper's account in *The Last of the Mohicans*. By the early 1900s the lake was a popular summer destination for travelers arriving by rail and steamboat, and the hotel catered to that trade. The Detroit Publishing Company, which recorded resorts, towns and scenery across the country for commercial use, made this glass negative.
